those searching for a twist when it comes to enjoying one of Malaysia’s most favourable dishes (chicken rice) need not look any further and head over to No.137, Jalan Sarjana,Taman Connaught, 56000 Kuala Lumpur right away!

Sun Ming Charcoal Roast Restaurant (Sun Ming) is rich in history. It started off as a small stall offering chicken rice in two different places in Cheras which were Taman Midah and Taman Connaught.

Current Sun Ming owner Casper explained that his father used to move around the aforementioned areas just to make ends meet. These efforts have paid off as 37 years later, this restaurant has evolved into a two-shop lot space, which is always packed to the brim.

Stepping into this restaurant steeped in history, one would notice that much of the interior has been kept untouched, and maintained to appear nostalgic as it may have several decades ago.

When standing in front of the restaurant, it is hard for one to miss the long line of people that would queue up for the delicious food served here.

Taking a step into the restaurant, it is common to see strangers sharing a table as the establishment is perpetually packed.

The entrance of Sun Ming can seem a little cramped, however walking further into the restaurant one will notice a larger adjoining area in which patrons can relax and enjoy their favourite meals ever so comfortably.

Staff at the restaurant are friendly, polite and efficient due to the high demands by repeat and large number of customers.

Truly an appetising combination.

The owner of Sun Ming had advised to sample two of the restaurants most popular dishes and combine them to create a taste that truly stands out from the rest.

These dishes include roast duck chicken rice and “asam veggie”. Other dishes served at Sun Ming include roast chicken and pork, white rice, Yong Tau Fu and a list of other popular Chinese cuisine options as well.

As soon as the roasted duck rice was served, it was not hard to see why the restaurants patrons kept coming back. The roast duck appeared thick and succulent while its skin was thin and crispy just as it should be. The rice complementing the dish was wholesome and hot. Adding to that, it was also very flavourful.

The roast duck dish keeps customers coming back for more!

The “asam veggie” dish on the other hand, provided a zest of spiciness as well as pickled accents with a significantly savoury aftertaste. The owner explained that the meaty taste of the “asam veggie” comes from the duck and pork bone that the mixture of veggies is boiled with for several hours.

A plate of roasted duck rice costs RM7 while the “asam veggie” dish costs RM6. To some this may seem slightly pricey but the taste exceeds the amount that one would pay.

Sun Ming’s owner also shared that the restaurant’s signature drink is Amra (Hog Plum) juice at RM4, which helps to cleanse one’s taste buds after a hefty meal. Hog plums come in a range of colours including green, purple, red, orange and yellow and are well known for their rich antioxidant properties.

The only problem faced if one would visit this restaurant is securing a parking spot. For its taste and excellence in creating unique food combinations, this outlet deserves a rating of 9/10. Sun Ming is closed every Tuesday. For more information please contact 03-9133 2151.
